Importance of Annadanam

In sanskrit the word "Annam" means food and "Daanam" means to donate. Thus "Annadanam" means feeding the hungry and needy.

Annadanam is Mahadanam or the greatest donation in Hindu religion and is an essential part of Sanatana Dharma tradition. The food donation is not limited to feeding a human being but it encompasses all living beings. There are numerous stories in Hindu scriptures that extol the glory of Annadanam – prominent being Goddess Parvati appearing as Goddess Annapurnaeshwari and feeding Shiva. Another instant is that Karna taking rebirth as he had performed all types of donation except food donation.

Annadanam is a unique scheme among all donations. Nothing predominates it. By donating to Annadanam Scheme people get moksha. ‘Annam Para Brahma Swarupam’. Food only can support the body to attain Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha. The person, who participates in this sacred Annadanam, will be blessed by divine Gods. Creatures cannot live without food, hence the donors of Annadanam are also considered as donors of pranadanam. Pranadanam means to offer all things as donation, accordingly they are blessed. Annadanam is a sacred activity. It is said that the sacred works done by the people with the energy acquired by food bestows half of its effect to the donor of food and the rest is to that person. Many positive results like this can acquire from the Annadanam.

The importance of food is stressed in ancient scriptures including the Vedas, Upanisads, Dharma Sastras, Dhamma Padas and others. Taittiriya Upanishad declares, ‘All life force comes from food.’ (annam vai pranah) and “Let food be produced in plenty” (annam bahu kurveet). In Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna declares, “From food all beings are evolved” (annad bhavanti bhutani). Manu Dharma Sastra declares, “regard the guest as a deity” (‘atithih devo bhava’) plainly expresses this worldwide tradition among ancient societies that deities may move upon the earth in human guise, and that one should therefore regard them with the utmost courtesy and respect and hospitality–including the offering of food items. Annadanams are conducted with this very principle in mind, for among the hungry crowd there may also be the anonymous genuine devotee, saint or even a deva or deity. Indeed, each and every poor person is regarded in this way, as expressed in the Sanskrit saying daridra Narayana (“God dwells in the poor person”).

Serving food to the hungry is equal to effect of performing ritual yagna. Human beings can only be satisfied with food but not with gold, dress and other things, as they desire to have them more and more. But in case of food a man wholeheartedly says that the food is ‘enough’ for him. It is said that glory, strength and fame will be acquired in Trilokas by Annadanam. The donor of Anandanam will get first entry in the heaven. For this noble cause, Achalananda Ashramam started “Annadanam” is conducted to thousands of people on special occasions like the birthdays of ‘Swami’ and ‘Amma’ and important festival days throughout the year and to the devotees, followers and visitors of Swami & Ashram every day.

Lord Sri Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavatam, "I can be worshiped within the Cows by offerings of grass and other suitable grains and paraphernalia for the pleasure and health of the Cows and one may worship me with in the Vaishnavas by offering loving friendship to them and honoring them in all respects."

The Goshala the Holy, intellectual & spiritual complex being made to know about our Universal Mother "THE COW" in our fast Kaliyuga life. It is the concept of the need for dissemination of knowledge on which the center is based.

By serving the Cows one receives tremendous spiritual benefit. Feeding grains to the Cows, offering puja, or simply a scratch under the neck will please these peaceful personalities and attracts the attention of supreme personality of God.

People will be practical and participate in inter-religious, interfaith dialogue besides getting an overview of the best spiritual teachings communicated through the latest technology.

Protection of Cows is the single-most important principle towards saving the whole world from both moral and spiritual degradation. Simply by protection of Cows all the wonderful benefits of religiosity and piety will be automatically achieved without any separate endeavor. This is because Cows are as beloved to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, as even saintly Brahmans.

Importance of Cow and her Protection

The ancient civilizations of the world were largely agriculture based economy. People would grow their food locally. The act of feeding ourselves is not an independent effort but needs collaboration with nature and other living beings.

Cow protection formed an integral part of traditional farming. According to human gene record, domestic cows and human dietary habits evolved side by side in a symbiotic relationship. Cows gave double value, they provided the soil with essential nutrients and they gave milk, completing the human dietary need.

The cow is one of humanity’s most precious resources as is obvious from the quantity of milk we consume in the modern world. Unfortunately in greed for profit, humans have exploited cows not only for their milk but also for products obtained by slaughtering them. Humans have this tendency to exploit others and to curb this tendency there are codes of conduct to protect others’ interests. Such protection should also be extended to innocent creatures who live beside humans in mutual dependence.

In scriptures it is said, namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca jagad-dhitaya krsnaya govindaya namo namah, "My Lord, You are the well-wisher of the Cows and the brahmanas, and you are the well-wisher of the entire human society and world." (Visnu Purana 1.19.65) Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the prime protector of brahminical culture and the Cow. Without knowing and respecting these pleasing personalities, one cannot realize the science of God, and without this knowledge, any welfare activities or humanitarian propaganda cannot be successful. SB 4.21.38 purport.

For the Cowherd men and the Cows, Krishna is the supreme friend. His pastimes in Gokula, His dharma, are always favorable to the brahmanas and the Cows. His first business is to give all comfort to the Cows and the brahmanas. In fact, comfort for the brahmanas is secondary, and comfort for the Cows is His first concern. Because of His presence, all people would overcome all difficulties and always be situated in transcendental bliss.

Human society needs only sufficient grain and sufficient Cows to solve its economic problems. All other things but these two are artificial necessities created by man to kill his valuable life at the human level and waste his time in things which are not needed. Lord Krishna, as the teacher of human society, personally showed by his acts that the mercantile community, or the vaisyas or business or trading community, should herd Cows and Bulls and thus give protection to these valuable animals. According to smrti regulation, the Cow is the mother and the Bull the father of the human being. The Cow is the Mother because just as one sucks the breast of one's Mother, human society takes Cow's milk. Similarly, the Bull is the Father of human society because the Father earns for the children just as the Bull tills the ground to produce food grains. Human society will kill its spirit of life by killing the Father and the Mother.

The Cow is the most important animal for developing the human body to perfection. The body can be maintained by any kind of foodstuff, but Cow's milk is particularly essential for developing the finer tissues of the human brain so that one can understand the intricacies of transcendental knowledge. A civilized man is expected to live on foodstuffs comprising fruits, vegetables, grains, sugar and milk. The Bull helps in the agricultural process of producing grain, etc., and thus in one sense the Bull is the father of humankind, whereas the Cow is the Mother, for she supplies milk to human society. A civilized man is therefore expected to give all protection to the Bulls and Cows.

Vedic civilization treated cows and bulls as sacred and thus protected them from abuse. Protecting cows is an important step for our survival in future. An understanding of the sanctity of all life, not just human life is essential for human survival. What we do to nature and to animals we do to ourselves, because we are all part of the web of life on earth.

Cow urine, cow dung & other milk products have very valuable medicinal benefits.

A man could easily maintain his family by agriculture and protecting cows. Even today, if properly managed, cows & bulls can be an important resource in local economies. Srila Prabhupada said, “When we produce food grains and vegetables, we can give protection to the cows; while giving protection to the cows, we can draw from them abundant quantities of milk; and by getting enough milk and combining it with food grains and vegetables, we can prepare hundreds of nectarean foods. We can happily eat this food and thus avoid industrial enterprises and joblessness.” (Srimad Bhagvatam 8.6.12)

In ayurveda it is said:

gavyam pavitram ca rasayanam ca pathyam ca hrdyam balam buddhi syata aayuh pradam rakt vikar hari tridosh hridrog vishapaham syata Meaning: Cow urine panchgavya is great elixir, proper diet, pleasing to heart, giver of mental and physical strength, enhances longevity. For many months, research has been conducted on how to make the recipes based on scriptural information. Some of the inputs were also taken from the most reliable research papers of other organizations that have been introducing these products for quite some time in the Indian market. All recipes for the GOMATA products were chosen carefully to make sure its contents, when combined with cow urine and cow dung, would not result in any negative reaction. Nevertheless, cow urine and cow dung are always pure, making the other contents purified.

Cow urine provides mode of goodness. Thus helps us to perform correct activities by mind. Thus protects from diseases. 10. Ganga is destroyer of sins, thus cow urine destroys such previous sins and so diseases are cured.

11. The diseases caused by entrance of ghosts in body are cured by intake of cow urine. The Master of ghosts is Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva holds Ganga on his head. Ganga is in cow urine also. Thus by taking cow urine, the ghosts get to see Ganga over their master's head. So they are calmed and become peaceful. So they do not trouble the body. Thus, diseases caused by entrance of ghosts are also destroyed.

Achalananda Ashramam’s Goshala

The Goshala at Achalananda Asharamam was started in 2010 with 9 cows & bulls. At present the number have increased to 50 and are expected to reach 100 in next few years. In order to accommodate the increased numbers a new Goshala is planned with rope free zones, fresh water etc. The purpose of the Goshala at Achalananda Asharamam is to demonstrate the principle of cow protection and how their blessings can be suitably utilized in our day to day life.

Milk from the cows meets the daily requirement of milk for the Ashramam. And even if they are no more productive in milk production or bull power they can be utilized for variety of purposes.

Traditionally cows are treated as one of the family members at Ashramam and due care is given to them. To ensure proper medical care a veterinary doctor visits the goshala regularly and is locally available in case of emergency situations. As for their diet green fodder like corn & millet is being grown in abundant quantity.

The Importance of the Cow and Bull

The people of our times have forgotten that the Cow is the most important animal for human society. The Bull is the emblem of Dharma and cow is the representative of the Earth. When the Bull and Cow are in a joyful mood, it is to be understood that the people of the world will also be in a joyful mood. The reason is that the Bull helps in production of grains in the agricultural field, and the Cow delivers milk, the miracle food which can be further converted into curd, yogurt, butter and ghee. Milking a Cow means drawing the principle of religion in liquid form. Cow’s milk is so pure that it is considered liquid religiosity. So in scriptures Cow is considered to one of our MOTHERS. The Cows give milk and the Bull gives grains through tilling the land, they are considered the MOTHER and the FATHER of human society. Both the Cow and Bull are symbols of the most offence less living beings because even their dung and urine are of IMMENSE VALUE (medicinal, fuel, etc.) to human society.

Our Responsibility

Human society must, therefore, maintain these two animals carefully. But, unfortunately, both are being slaughtered in large numbers, in India itself it is 60,000 per day and in U.S. on weekends it is 1, 59,500 according to recent statistics. These greatly sinful acts are responsible for so many troubles in present society. To kill cows means to end human civilization. People do not know what harm they are doing in the name of economic development. They do not realize that only by seeing that bulls and cows are happy in all respects, human society can be happy. This is a FACT by the LAWS OF NATURE.

Poor People
Poverty is the lack of a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute poverty or destitution is inability to afford basic human needs, which commonly includes clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. About 1.7 billion people are estimated to live in absolute poverty today.

Most of us think that poor people live in other countries around the world. The truth is, there are poor people everywhere. Poor people do not have a lot of money, food, or clothing. Sometimes they are homeless or live in places that would be hard for us to imagine—like under bridges or on the footpath.

Poverty, food prices and hunger are inextricably linked. Poverty causes hunger. Not every poor person is hungry, but almost all hungry people are poor. Millions live with hunger and malnourishment because they simply cannot afford to buy enough food, cannot afford nutritious foods or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to grow enough good food of their own. Hunger can be viewed as a dimension of extreme poverty. It is often called the most severe and critical manifestation of poverty.

When a country has economy problems, the poor get even poorer and other people become poor, too. The Great Depression is an example of this. Lots of men traveled across the country looking for work, but there were no jobs for them. Their families were thrown out of their homes, had to beg for food, or didn’t have enough clothing to keep them warm. Some people are still just as poor and in need as people were during the Great Depression. It is the right time for all of us need to step forward and do what we can to help these people.

How Achalanada Ashramam helping Poor People

Asharamam takes a holistic approach to hunger, which means addressing its root causes – including poverty. In Asharamam, we build the capacity of women and men to move beyond poverty, training them in the skills, methods, knowledge and leadership needed to take self-reliant actions so they can meet their own basic needs, improve their communities and build better futures for themselves and their children.
